Doors

In which the author talks about fate, and the concept of opening and closing doors.

So, doors close, and other doors open. I'm not much of a fatalist: I don't think that doors open AS A RESULT of other doors closing - I don't think those two events necessarily need to be linked at all, but often, in the world (in MY world, anyway) some doors close, and other doors open.

This week sees the end of my stint at the box office for circus show extraordinaire, La Soiree. I've only been there a few weeks, but I have to say, as non-vocational jobs go, it's been a lot of fun.

Actors need to earn a crust between acting jobs, and I've never been one to sit idly by the phone, waiting for it to ring with the next big gig. I'd much rather take matters into my own hands, and go out and get a day job. I've had some awful ones along the way, but the good thing is, you know they are only temporary. Something will come along at some point to rescue you. Surely. Please?

La Soiree, however, has been an absolute joy. Even with the hassles of the computers and printers failing at crucial moments (come on: it's a temporary site. The big top is usually a car park, things are BOUND to be a bit temperamental), I've had s great time. There's a wonderful team running the show, Luisa, Simon, Brett, and some brilliant box office colleagues too. After tomorrow's show, I shall miss it.

So what doors are going to open?

I have a meeting next week for another day job, which may or may not suit how I live my life. The work I do in the corporate world seems to be picking up again, after its annual post-Christmas slump: I have two drumming events in the diary for the next couple of weeks, for my dear friends, Lisa and Mark (patents of my goddaughter, Poppy), and yesterday, I journeyed up to Burnley, to surprise a wedding party with a selection of opera, swing and musical theatre classics. I always love doing the wedding gigs. There's always such a loving atmosphere. Let's face it, people are only there because of live un the first place, and it always makes for a very happy environment to work in. Always a joy!

Add to that, I may be on the verge of making an exciting announcement about the possibility of a return to a show that I thoroughly enjoyed last time around. Watch this space!

Lest I forget, I've also got the coming together of Brother Act as well. Ian, Jem and I are heavily into rehearsals now, and thoroughly enjoying the process. If you haven't already, check out our website at www.brotheract.co.uk. You can sign up to our newsletter there, follow us on Twitter (@TheBrotherAct), or find us on Facebook.

With all that going on, sometimes my life is more like a series of revolving doors, rather than ordinary ones that simply open or close.

I'm very lucky.

So this is me, signing off.
